Health officials in Gauteng have raised concerns over a sharp increase in malaria cases and deaths across the province.
The Gauteng Department of Health reports that 414 cases and 11 deaths were recorded between January and March this year. This represents a significant spike compared to the same period last year, which saw 230 cases and only one fatality.
The department further noted that the full 12 months of 2025 recorded a total of 666 cases and seven fatalities, highlighting the aggressive nature of the current year’s early surge.
Authorities warn that the spike is directly linked to increased travel to malaria-endemic regions. Key areas of concern include:
Limpopo
Mpumalanga
Neighbouring countries
Many residents are reportedly returning to Gauteng already infected after visiting these high-risk zones.
Officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and monitor for the following symptoms:
Fever and chills
Headaches
Persistent fatigue
"Seek medical help immediately if you feel unwell after travelling to known endemic areas."
To mitigate the risk, the department is encouraging the use of preventative measures such as bug spray and protective clothing.
The Gauteng Health Department is currently strengthening its monitoring and response efforts. These actions come as the province prepares to observe World Malaria Day later this month, focusing on heightened awareness and rapid intervention to curb the spread.
