The State has opposed bail for suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi, warning that his release would not be in the interest of justice.
On Thursday, prosecutors told the Boksburg Magistrates Court that Mkhwanazi may interfere with witnesses if granted bail.
He was arrested after being found in possession of a large quantity of ammunition, which the State argues he was not authorised to have, as he had already been suspended at the time.

Mkhwanazi and Ekurhuleni municipal manager Kagiso Lerutla are facing Schedule 5 charges, meaning they must convince the court that they qualify for bail.
The charges include fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.
Reading from the investigating officer’s affidavit, linked to the Madlanga South African Police Service (SAPS) task team, prosecutor Advocate Mantwe told the court the accused posed a risk to the investigation.
“This is an assault on the criminal justice system by the very people who were supposed to protect it.”
