Seven people have died in a crash between a taxi and a bus in the Eastern Cape.

The taxi with staff on board allegedly made a U-turn into the path of an oncoming Algoa Bus in Kariega on Monday morning. 

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport said several other people were injured, some seriously, and have been taken to nearby hospitals.

Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said an investigation into the crash is now underway.

“The MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape Mr Xolile Nqatha is extending his sincere word of condolences to those families that have lost their loved ones, while wishing those in hospital a speedy and full recovery. 

“We are looking into the real cause of this crash, and we are urging road users, motorists, in particular, to remain extra vigilant and help us avoid, avoidable crashes.”
