Proceedings at the Madlanga Commission will not be held in public on Monday after the inquiry ruled that they would be held entirely in private.

A Crime Intelligence officer, appearing as Witness G, had initially been scheduled to testify partly in camera.

However, during the early stages of his testimony, the witness was unable to answer most questions in an open session, saying this could reveal his identity.

It has been a slow day at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, largely due to technical glitches that delayed proceedings.

Witness G is testifying from a remote location, and connectivity issues led to two adjournments within the space of an hour.

The witness was also unable to answer most questions in detail or read from his affidavit, saying doing so could reveal his identity and put his life at risk.

Following a lengthy adjournment, commission chairperson Mbuyiseli Madlanga ruled that the proceedings would now be held in camera.

"Everything now has to be fully in camera. If we were not to proceed that way, we would have to have stop-starts-stop-starts with Witness G’s testimony, which is not desirable".

It remains unclear how long the testimony will continue.

Witness G is likely to be asked to confirm the status of controversial political fixer, Brown Mogotsi, who told the commission he was also a Crime Intelligence informant.
