Alice in the Cape Flats, running at the Baxter, puts a fresh, topical spin on the Lewis Carroll classic.

CapeTalk's Sara-Jayne Makwala King is joined by writer, director, and choreographer of the play, Berlin Williams, as well as Alice, played by Dee Blogging, and Hatter, played by Valentina Petronella.

Alice in the Cape Flats is more than just another retelling of Carroll's seminal coming-of-age story, it's an exploration of identity and authenticity in a socio-politically divided city; with all the fun and whimsy of a drag-musical.

“You can expect the general story of Alice, with the reimagining of drag. It’s a full musical.”
- Berlin Williams, writer, director, and choreographer.

Williams, driven by his - and his cast's - experiences in the Cape Flats, put the play together as a way of claiming identity in a society bent on telling him he wasn't good enough, that he didn't fit in.

The production isn't meant to be just a fun night of music, comedy, and outrageous costumes, but to start a conversation about the acceptance of minority voices in a still-fractured city.

“The story of resistance. The story of coming from somewhere and being told you’re not good enough, and believing that you’re not good enough, that was something that I always resonated with as a kid, being a brown queer boy from Cape Town.”
- Berlin Williams, writer, director, and choreographer.
