Cape Town to deliver new budget on Wednesday after public outcry

26 May 2025 | 8:55The City of Cape Town is revising its budget after outrage over rates.
CapeTalk’s Lester Kiewit speaks with Axolile Notywala of GOOD.
Listen below:
Over 14,000 Cape Town residents submitted comments to the City’s 2025/26 budget during the initial consultation phase.
The backlash was largely due to high rates and fixed monthly charges.
The City announced that it would update the budget and aim to ease the impact of monthly bill increases and offer electricity price relief for all households.
This budget is set to be presented at a city council meeting on Wednesday, 28 May, and residents will have 14 days to provide feedback.

Notywala says this is the first time we have seen the City redo the budget before it has been passed in response to public backlash.
He adds that the budget could have been challenged in court if the submissions were not considered.
“Public participation in general is very important.”
