CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town says it will follow the Western Cape High Court order while evicting people occupying its public spaces.

Phase one of the evictions is expected to start on Monday.

The spots include various road reserves and bridges in the vicinity of the Nelson Mandela Boulevard intersection with Hertzog Boulevard, Sea Point tennis court, Old Marine Drive and the Christiaan Barnard bridge.

The evictions follow the metro's victory last week in obtaining the high court order to evict unhoused communities occupying public areas.

The high court order, however, states that the municipality must provide alternative accommodation to those affected by evictions.

The city said that unhoused communities would be given an option for transitional shelter or be provided with housing materials.

According to the city, its law enforcement officials will be on standby to assist those who have taken up offers for relocation.

Meanwhile, the metro said those who choose housing kits would have to find land where they would be permitted to build their structures.
