DA doubles down on calls for GNU to address the rising cost of living

JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has doubled down on calls for the Government of National Unity (GNU) to address the runaway costs of living amid concerns that consumers are overstretched.

High inflation and elevated interest rates are among the challenges keeping the cost of living up.

In a bid to help alleviate the pressure on consumers, the South African Poultry Association has again called for government to scrap the VAT charge on certain chicken products.

DA spokesperson, Willie Aucamp, has welcomed the association’s endorsement of the calls to expand the basket of zero-rated food items.

"The DA has been pleading this case for years now, arguing that poor households must be relieved of their financial burdens. Chicken is not only South Africa’s most widespread meat but also an important source of cheap protein for millions of low-income families including vulnerable children in poor homes. The far-reaching impact of doing away with 15% VAT on these products cannot be over-emphasised."
