Ethics issue delays Nafiz Modack case

CAPE TOWN - The trial against of alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, has been delayed again on Wednesday due to an ethical issue related to one of the defence attorneys.

Modack and his 14 co-accused face over 120 charges related to various crimes, including murder, extortion and racketeering.

The cross-examination of Hawks officer, Edward du Plessis, was delayed for a third day this week as the State and defence deliberated in chambers.

Earlier this week, Judge Robert Henney cited an ethical issue that could result in a conflict of interest and impact the trial as the reason for the delay.

EWN understands that one of the defence attorneys previously received payments from a front company which was allegedly used by Modack to pay some of the accused to commit crimes, using money extorted from a luxury car dealership.

The court will later decide on an outcome before the cross-examination of Du Plessis continues.
