These ‘explorers by heart’ are documenting their local adventures through Mzansi by road, one YouTube episode at a time.

Meet Sonia and Curtis Dillon, the couple behind ‘DustBugs Travel' who’ve explored 600+ South African towns

CapeTalk's Pippa Hudson speaks to Curtis and Sonia Dillon, the husband-and-wife duo behind DustBugs Travel.

Listen below:

Curtis and Sonia Dillon are a South African husband-and-wife team known for their popular YouTube channel, DustBugs Travel, where they share travel videos exploring the country's back roads and forgotten places, and for their work as Team Dillon Estate Agents, selling property in the Helderberg region.

Their DustBugs channel showcases adventures in small towns, national parks, and coastal villages, while their real estate work focuses on areas like Strand, Gordon's Bay, and Somerset West.

The couple's platform has grown to over 50,000 subscribers, and Sonia Dillion says it's because they are 'a normal husband and wife who still work full-time' and need a bit of an escape from their day jobs as real estate professionals.

The couple satisfy their local wanderlust by renting a vehicle and driving from one adventure to the next.

What keeps them going is that there's still so much left to explore and, of course, subscribers to their channel get to hop along for the ride as they document their travels, local food stops and eateries, and views through each YouTube episode.

So far, the couple have explored over 600 towns... and counting.

"We live in the Western Cape, in the town of Strand, we're extremely happy there and we love it but we also feel it's incredibly important for us to see other parts of our country because sometimes, I think, we live in a little bubble and it's important to see how other folks live in other towns... and there's so much beauty in our country to see! We don't think we'll run out of places."
- Sonia Dillion
"We've done most places in the Western Cape, Northern Cape, a lot of places in the Free State and Eastern Cape... we've started doing Limpopo, Kwa-Zulu Natal, and Mpumalanga... we've done all of these, and it's way over 650 places... and there's still so much left to do."
- Curtis Dillion
"We absolutely love it. We love showing what is there and finding that the people of the towns are so eager to share their places with us... Every town has special people, and they're just so welcoming and willing to share their stories with us."
- Curtis Dillion
"We travel organically and show what we happen upon... we still value the things that very often are overlooked. For example, an old dilapidated building, we don't see the demise, the decay, the neglect... we see the beauty that still exists. I think it's so important when one travels to try and focus on the good and beauty that remains, and that is our premise..."
