Deputy Labour Minister Jomo Sibiya says surviving workers from the building collapse in Ormonde qualify for compensation.
Briefing the media on Tuesday, Sibiya confirmed that the employer had registered the workers with the Department of Labour’s Compensation Fund, meaning they are covered should they be injured on duty.
The fund pays out to employees who are injured, contract an occupational disease, or die due to work-related incidents.
A section of a two‑storey building collapsed on Monday, killing six people on the scene. Three more later succumbed to their injuries.
Sibiya said officials have already begun assessing the surviving workers so that their compensation processes can get underway.
Meanwhile, the owner of the construction site has still not been traced, and investigations into what caused the collapse remain ongoing.
“We have to assist them because they are registered with the compensation fund, they are registered with fem, so it means legally, when it comes to issues of social security, these companies registered these workers.”
The site has now been handed over to the police following the recovery of all the bodies.
