Oudtshoorn police are investigating the discovery of a woman's body.
Thirty-nine-year-old Janine Stander was reported missing a week ago.
Her body was found on Tuesday in a canal, where it was first spotted by a member of the public.
The police's Christopher Spies said: "Oudtshoorn police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a 39-year-old woman was retrieved from the water between Oudtshoorn and Dysselsdorp on Tuesday morning. The woman was later identified as Janine Stander, who was reported missing last week. The circumstances surrounding her death forms part of an ongoing police investigation."
