CapeTalk's Amy MacIver (in for Sara-Jayne Makwala King) gets the latest motoring news from Melinda Ferguson on Car Talk.

As the influx of Chinese car brands continues, the new Haval H6 plug-in hybrid  (PHEV) has landed in South Africa.

Motoring journalist Melinda Ferguson takes the Ultra Luxury model for a test drive around Elgin in the Western Cape.

The H6 GT PHEV is the fastest Chinese car she's so far, says Ferguson, keeping in mind that she's yet to take the MG Cyberster for a spin.

In this mid-size SUV market for plug-in hybrids, the Haval's competitors are the likes of the Toyoto RAV4 and the BYD Sealion 6.

Considering South Africans' range anxiety in view of our still limited number of charging stations, Ferguson highlights the 'generous' range of the H6, which Haval puts at 180 kilometres on electric charge.

The combined range is 1 000 km.

"Let's say it's 150 km even (electric range); that is plenty for you to do a day's business, and I think you could feasibly put one tank of petrol in and probably drive about 2.5 thousand km without having to fill up if you keep on charging."

Aside from the 'thrilling drive', Ferguson also loved the car's safety features, upmarket interior, panoramic sunroof and huge grille.

She says the selling price of R799 900 is reasonable compared to competitors, given the 7-year 200,000-km warranty.
