SA govt says it will continue to lobby the US to renew AGOA

JOHANNESBURG - The South African government said it would continue to lobby the United States (US) to renew the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) as the clock winds down on the expiration date.

AGOA, which was established in 2000, gives eligible African countries an exemption from taxes on their exports to the US.

The legislation is set to expire in September 2025, while US legislators are yet to sign off on another extension.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said the bilateral ties between the countries remain in good standing.

"South Africa continues to advance a case for the renewal of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act, which expires in 14 months, and supports calls by African trade ministers for the US government to do away with the annual reviews of AGOA."
