SA Wheelchair Rugby clinches Euro C Division Championship

South Africa Wheelchair Rugby (SA WCR) has emerged victorious at the Euro C Division Championship, triumphing in a thrilling final against the Republic of Ireland with a score of 62-29. 

The championship took place from October 9 to 12, 2025, at the Skien Fritidspark multi-purpose stadium in Skien, Norway. 

“We are incredibly proud of our national team. They entered the competition well-prepared and received exceptional coaching from Gary Burnard,” said a representative of SA WCR. 

Wheelchair Rugby, also commonly known as Murderball or Quad Rugby, is celebrated as the only mixed-gender full-contact sport featured in the Paralympic Games. This championship is a significant step in SA WCR’s journey toward Paralympic qualification.

“The national team is now gearing up for its entry into Division B, paving the way for a shot at achieving Paralympic status,” added SA WCR in a statement to EWN. 

Known for its rapid gameplay, Wheelchair Rugby combines elements of rugby, basketball, and handball. 

The objective is straightforward: players aim to carry the ball across the opponent’s try line to score points. Utilising specially designed wheelchairs equipped with reinforced frames and bumpers, athletes navigate the court with skill and intensity, engaging in full-contact play with their competitors. 

With their impressive performance in the Euro C Division Championship, Team SA is now setting its sights on Division B, holding hopes for participation in the 2028 Paralympics.
