The Money Show's Stephen Grootes chats to Yoko CEO Katlego Maphai.

Payments business Yoco has become hugely successful since its launch in South Africa in 2015.

Use of the Yoco card machine has also benefited the staff working for its merchants through increased tipping, the company says.

Stephen Grootes talks to co-founder and CEO Katlego Maphai about Yoco's built-in tipping feature.

Maphai believes its thanks to the simplicity of this feature that some clients have reported a doubling or even three-fold jump in tips.

"It's so simple - you just press a button during the payment process, and you can choose also not to do it. The machine faces the customer and now we also have these terminals with big android screens."

"Something that was quite elaborate and only for larger businesses that could afford it we made super simple through software, and that's what is driving the adoption."

Maphai says Yoco has paid out more than R1 billion in tips since its launch ten years ago and is really proud of this.

The payment machine has default values ranging from 10% to 20%, with an option to add a customised percentage.

"We're really proud of this, considering where the money goes."
