A 100-year-old World War II veteran has recently become the 'World's Oldest Competitive Bodybuilder', which refers to a bodybuilder who is still actively competing.
Andrew Bastinto's win broke the Guinness World Record, after competing in the NGA Gator Classic in Deltona, Florida by participating in a men's physique competition, beating the previous record held by Jim Arrington (90) in 2015.
Born in Manhattan and raised in Brooklyn, Bastinto began training at age 12 using public park equipment.
After serving in the war, Bastinto opened Olympia Gym in Queens and trained celebrities like Al Pacino and Patrick Stewart, while mentoring Arnold Schwarzenegger, reports say.
In 1979, Bastinto founded the National Gym Association (NGA), promoting drug-free bodybuilding, and creating one of the first personal trainer certification programmes.
Bastinto is described as "a natural athlete" - clearly paying off in his golden years... while Friedman describes Bastinto as an "inspiration."
"I promise you, if you watch the video of this guy working out in the gym and lifting his weights at the age of 100, let this be an inspiration to all of us who think we're getting older because we lose about 10% of our muscle mass every 10 years - and the truth is, and the health gurus are all now saying it clearly, muscle mass is the key to a healthy old age... keep your muscles going."
