Crime statistics for the third quarter of the current financial year in the Western Cape reveals murder has shown a slight decrease, while there's been an increase in attempted murders and sexual offences.

Between October and December 2025, the province recorded 1,157 murders, down by 41 cases compared to the same period in 2024.

Cape Town still remains the epicentre of killings, responsible for more than 80% of all murders in the province.

Sexual offences in the province have increased by 2.9%, with 2,014 cases reported across the province.

Rape cases rose to 1,370, up by 17 cases compared to the same period last year.

The statistics also show there were 114 extortion incidents led by protection rackets, overwhelmingly concentrated in Cape Town's suburbs.

While murder decreased, Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile said illegal firearms are a big problem.

"Of much concern is the prevalence of violent crime, driven by illegal firearms… also of concern is the involvement of youth in criminal activities."

Property-related crime in the province saw a significant downturn, with offences dropping by 11.1%.
