CAPE TOWN - Parents are protesting outside the J.G. Meiring High School on Tuesday morning following a stabbing incident involving a learner.

A grade 11 pupil was stabbed outside of the school gates after school was dismissed on Monday afternoon.

Fellow learners then helped him back onto the school grounds for safety.

The teen is recovering in hospital.

The boy who stabbed him is not a learner at the school.

Concerned parents said there had been several incidents of violence involving learners at JG Meiring High School but the principal and the provincial education department had not responded to their concerns about their children’s safety.

One mother said that she had had enough as violence on the school grounds wasn’t their only worry.

"My daughter came to JG Meiring last year and in the first few months, she had an anxiety attack because of the fights that's going on at school. Last year we had issues with fights at school, we had issues with teachers leaving, we had issues with teacher absenteeism, so this year we just want to put an end to it. We tired of the fights."

The Western Cape Education Department said its district support team would be at the school on Tuesday morning to provide counselling to learners and teachers.

Police are investigating Monday’s attack.
