JOHANNESBURG - Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said that over the last two weeks, Eskom has had enough generating capacity to meet demand in the evenings.
Ramokgopa gave an update on the state of the country's power grid on Tuesday, as the rolling power cuts were reduced to stage one.
While the utility can accommodate this demand, he said it continued to implement load shedding as some of the generating capacity came from Eskom's emergency reserves.
"Three thousand [megawatts] of that capacity available has to be drawn from the open-cycle gas turbines which are burning diesel, so we've reduced our consumption of diesel."
