JOHANNESBURG - City Power turned the lights off at a Damelin campus in Braamfontein, as the institution’s unpaid electricity bill neared R3 million.
Electricity at the college was disconnected on Friday during the power utility's weekly cut-off operation in an attempt to recoup revenue owed to the City of Johannesburg.
City Power said Damelin was one of five businesses in the CBD that were disconnected during the latest drive, with all five owing the city a combined R37 million.
In 2023, another Damelin campus was cut off in Randburg after failing to pay its R2 million electricity debt.
City Power Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the utility would not tolerate non-payment.
"In total, the inner city is owed over R4 billion by defaulting customers. This includes, unfortunately, government departments and state-owned entities that are housed in Braamfontein. We also have health institutions and education institutions."
