Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) says it is on high alert as severe thunderstorms are expected to hit large parts of the city, bringing the risk of flash flooding.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned that heavy downpours could impact most regions, with low-lying areas, informal settlements and flood-prone roads being particularly vulnerable.

Disaster Management teams are monitoring conditions closely, ready to respond to any emergencies as they arise.

Residents are being urged to avoid crossing swollen river streams and drainage channels, while motorists are advised to drive with caution and steer clear of flooded roads and the Nelson Mandela Bridge.

Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the city had activated its response protocols.

"We also have our disaster management monitoring teams in all seven regions of the city. All of our fire stations are fully operational, so we are ready to respond to all water-related emergencies that might occur," Mulaudzi said
