JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) ramped up its communications offering ahead of the 29 May polls following a decision taken during a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) earlier in the week.

This will see nearly 20 members of the NEC working alongside the national spokesperson and the Department of Information and Publicity.

The ANC spent the week campaigning in KwaZulu-Natal, where it launched its 2024 elections manifesto on Sunday.

ANC NEC members with a background in communication are likely to feature as the voices on various issues as the party prepares for the 2024 elections.

One of those voices will be former presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko.

She told Eyewitness News the move was not necessarily new, as chairs of their subcommittees function as spokesperson on various issues.

“I think the media fragmentation, the proliferation of different platforms makes it difficult for just one person to be available all the time as needed and to be able to articulate the positions as needed.”

Diko said this was also in line with the ANC’s vision of professionalising how the organisation conducted business.

In 2023, the Sunday World reported that ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula was not happy with the performance of current national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri.

Diko said the new team would be working alongside the national spokesperson.
