More than 2,500 vehicles are expected to pass through the Kranskop toll gate every hour on Thursday evening, as thousands of travellers make their way to Limpopo for the Easter Weekend.

This was revealed by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, who held an Easter road traffic campaign media briefing along the N1 highway.

A large number of motorists travelling this weekend are believed to be heading to various religious gatherings, particularly the passover pilgrimage at the Zion Christian Church (ZCC )headquarters near Polokwane.

About 2,000 buses are travelling to Moria for the ZCC passover pilgrimage, where more than one million members are expected to attend the church’s annual mass gathering.

Creecy said the N1 highway to Limpopo is heavily congested, but law enforcement officers are on high alert and ready to manage the traffic.

"Law enforcement has been intensified over this period, with the deployment of national traffic officers to ensure visibility day and night."

She said law enforcement officers will be on the highway the entire weekend.

"Special operations on these major roads include increased patrol density, continual speed monitoring and alcohol testing as well as coordinated deployments at toll plazas, stops and known accident hotspots."

Creecy said officers will also be visible when pilgrims travel back to their respective provinces.
