Consumer commission calls on all peanut butter manufacturers to immediately test products

CAPE TOWN - The National Consumer Commission (NCC) called on all manufacturers of peanut butter, including peanut butter-based products and products that contain peanuts, to immediately test the products.
Several retailers recently recalled a variety of peanut butter products after aflatoxin - a poisonous substance produced by certain fungi that are naturally found on crops like peanuts, tree nuts, maize and grains.

The items to be tested include, but are not limited to, chocolates, sweets, cookies, ice cream, and peanut butter spreads.
The latest suppliers to recall their products are Woolworths and Eat Naked, with both suppliers informing the commission that their products were found to have higher than acceptable levels of aflatoxin.
“We have already communicated with some suppliers and are now extending this call to other suppliers, including those who produce product containing peanuts,” said the NCC’s acting commissioner, Thezi Mabuza.
“The notice requires suppliers to test and share the results of their products made available for sale with the commission within 14 days.”
