While Gen Z can widely be considered as the ‘self’ generation with the rise in mental health awareness and self-care among younger people, one aspect of health seems to have fallen out of the spotlight – sexual health, and more specifically HIV.
Forever Wena aims to change that.
The #ForeverWena mission is to bring HIV prevention, awareness, and healthy sexual behaviour to the attention of the youth, calling on them to choose themselves and put their healthiest foot forward. The campaign recognizes that young South Africans need this information and has recruited some of the country’s rising stars, such as actor Dillon Windvogel, to share the correct sexual health options and free resources available.
To unpack the importance of the campaign and what it means to him personally, the Blood and Water star joins Lunch with EB Inglis. Listen to the full conversation below:
MORE ABOUT #FOREVERWENA
- Young women aged 15-24 are disproportionately affected by HIV, accounting for 25% of new infections. At the same time, young men are less likely to be diagnosed and treated, and often transmit HIV to younger female partners, contributing to an inter-generational cycle of transmission.
- While the number of people living with HIV in South Africa has decreased from 14.0% in 2017 to 12.7% in 2022, the country is still one of the most adversely affected by the epidemic.
- It remains critical for the youth to embrace their agency and make informed decisions regarding healthy sexual behaviours.
