JOHANNESBURG - Eight Nigerian nationals have been arrested for attacking police officers and damaging their vehicle in Kimberley, Northern Cape.
Police said they were following up on information on a person who was believed to be in possession of drugs on Thursday.
The suspect was handcuffed during that operation.
Later, another group attacked the local police station, breaking windows, and damaging a police vehicle.
That incident led to the arrest of four more suspects.
Police spokesperson Koliswa Otola said people who prevented police from doing their work would be dealt with harshly.
"We will not allow such lawless behaviour. We are processing the suspects and working with Home Affairs to determine if they are legally or illegally in the country. Police will continue to stamp the authority of the state in the Northern Cape province."
