Speaking in Mamelodi on Friday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate in Tshwane, Cilliers Brink, has prioritised firing corrupt city officials as the party’s chief priority ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
With voting set for the 4th of November, the party is now intensifying its campaign in the capital.
In the 2021 municipal elections, the party came second in Tshwane with 32% of the vote, while the ANC secured 34%.
The City of Tshwane has recently come under the spotlight at the Madlanga Commission of inquiry, with a specific focus on procurement irregularities and tender fraud.
Brink said if he’s elected mayor, he’ll be ruthless toward officials found guilty of corruption.
"Corruption in Tshwane is not accidental, it is systematic. It survives because the system allows, and we will change the system, including those who are currently in control of it, whether you are in a management position or a service provider."
Brink's second commitment is to restore law and order by introducing crime-fighting technology such as drones and CCTV cameras.
He's also promised to upgrade water, electricity, and traffic infrastructure through partnerships with the private sector.
