CAPE TOWN - A court interpreter at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court in Cape Town is in trouble with the law.
Fifty-year-old Nomvuyo Mbowana was nabbed by the Hawks on Monday on corruption charges.
It's alleged that in November last year, Mbowana approached the family of an arrested person asking them to pay R30,000 in order for the prisoner to be granted bail.
She appeared at the Kuils River Magistrates Court on Monday and she's out on bail of R1,000.
Mbowana reportedly promised the family that she would speak to the magistrate to secure the suspect's release.
However, due to the suspect's personal bank account being frozen due to his case, the suspect could only pay R10,000.
It's understood that Mbowana accepted the money, and made an arrangement that the balance be paid after the suspect's release.
The matter was brought to the attention of the Hawks, which led to the court interpreter's arrest.
She's expected back in court on 19 June.
