The Geek Gathering takes place on 25 May in Linden, Johannesburg.

Aubrey Masango speaks to event organiser Franco Ferrarese ahead of World Goth Day.

Listen below.

World Goth Day, observed on 22 May, celebrates the goth scene, and allows people to make their presence known to the rest of the world.

Ferrarese says goth goes beyond wearing dark clothing and black lipstick.

Goth culture was established as a music-based subculture in the early 1980s.

Today it includes fashion, music, and art, celebrated through fashion shows, art exhibitions, and music performances.

“Goth culture is one of the few sub-cultures that actually stuck around and stood the test of time. That is why I think it draws so many people towards it.”
- Franco Ferrarese
“The black clothing and black lipstick is only one part of it. A lot of people do gothic fashion styles from various eras… it is more than what it used to be.”
- Franco Ferrarese

To commemorate World Goth Day, Gotcha’s Pizzeria, Ke Ai, and Yes Sir! Events is hosting its Geek Gathering Market on Saturday, 25 May.

It takes place from 11 am at the Garden on 4th, 56 4th Avenue, Linden, Johannesburg.
