Remuneration reports from South Africa’s top five mining giants unveiled their CEOs' colossal salaries in 2023, with some earning triple what the highest-paid banking CEOs make.

In the last financial year, the South African mining industry contributed a staggering R425.6 billion (6.2%) to the country’s GDP.

Despite warnings from the Minerals Council about significant challenges, the mining industry's impressive financial performance and economic contributions in 2023 ensured that the CEOs walked away with astronomical paychecks.

When looking at the five largest mining companies by market capitalisation on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, it's safe to say their CEOs aren't worrying about stretching their salaries until the next payday.

  • BHP Billiton CEO Mike Henry: Total remuneration of $13.7 million (R249.5 million), averaging R684 650 per day.
  • Glencore CEO Gary Nagle: Total remuneration of $5.8 million (R105.7 million), averaging R289 589 per day.
  • Anglo American CEO Duncan Wanblad: Total remuneration of £3.6 million (R83.1 million), averaging R227 671 per day.
  • South32 CEO Graham Kerr: Total remuneration of AUS$6.1 million (R74.2 million), averaging R203 288 per day.
  • Gold Fields CEO Martin Preece: Total remuneration of $2.8 million (R51 million), averaging R139 726 per day.

Is it time to rethink career choices?
