CAPE TOWN - Work on a major 72-hour water maintenance project in the southern suburbs has been completed successfully.

The City of Cape Town said this would ensure the pipe infrastructure was in the best possible condition for years to come.

Thirty-three areas in the southern suburbs, including Grassy Park, Steenberg, Marina da Gama, Lavender Hill, Plumstead and Wynberg, were affected by a water shut down over the past three days.

Tankers were stationed at eleven locations for residents to collect water.

Mayco member for Water and Sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, said that initially water and sanitation teams planned to replace five valves.

"I can now report that we have replaced an additional valve and so, therefore, six valves have been replaced in total as part of this project and that we kept to our commitment of completing in 72 hours. Already this morning, we have a number of communities reporting that their water has been restored."
