Fannie Nkosi questioned about contact with taxi boss linked to Armand Swart murder

The Madlanga Commission has questioned organised crime officer Sergeant Fannie Nkosi about his contact with a taxi boss linked to the murder of Vereeneging engineer Armand Swart.

Swart was killed in April 2024 in a suspected case of mistaken identity, as the hit was intended for a whistleblower at his company who exposed tender irregularities at Transnet.

Controversial businessman Katiso "KT" Molefe was arrested for orchestrating the hit, along with the suspected shooters.

On the day of Swart’s murder, Nkosi had extensive contact with a warrant officer Zungu from the Hawks who was investigating the matter.

Nkosi said the officer told him that they believed the person responsible for Swart’s murder was known to Irvin Mthakathi.

Mthakathi is a businessman with interests in the taxi and private security industry.

Nkosi said he has a close social relationship with Mthakathi.

“Zungu phoned me and told me that there are people who arrested or who committed murder. I’m not sure, and they are known to Mr Mthakathi. That is when I called Mr Mthakathi and said, ‘ey baba, they are saying there’s people arrested there, and they are known to you’ and he said, ‘I don’t know, let me check’.”

WhatsApp chats show Mthakathi sent Nkosi the name and ID number of Floyd Mabusela later in the day.

Mabusela is one of the people standing trial for the murder of Swart.
