Case against IEC official accused of stealing ballot boxes postponed

DURBAN - The court case against the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) official accused of stealing ballot boxes during this year's general election in KwaZulu-Natal has been postponed to later this month.
Musawenkosi Mnikathi is charged with contravening the Electoral Act during the 29 May elections.
He is accused of unlawfully transporting voting material in his vehicle.
Mnikathi appeared briefly before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
The defence lawyer in this case, Advocate Ashleigh Jennings, requested statements from the State in order to prepare for consultations.
"The matter returned to the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court today where the accused is charged with contravening the Electoral Act. The case was postponed to 23rd July 2024 for the accused to consult with his legal representatives," said NPA spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson Kara.
The State previously indicated that it had a strong case against the accused.
It believes he has a case to answer to.
