JOHANNESBURG - In a bid to crack down on illegal land invasions, the Gauteng government says it will establish an anti-land invasion unit.
On Wednesday, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi tabled before the provincial legislature the R2.3 billion budget for the Department of Community Safety.
The department, which now falls under the Premier's office, has seen over R300 million in budget cuts, compared to the previous financial year.
Lesufi said that part of the budget would be spent on establishing several provincial law enforcement units aimed at protecting government-owned electrical and water infrastructure.
"From the first of September 2024, there will be no new land invasion in Gauteng. We are establishing an anti-land invasion unit that will protect all land in our province and ensure that there is no one that invades land they don’t own in our province."
