LUSIKISIKI - Eastern Cape Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha is on Monday set to visit the deadly crime scene where 18 people were killed in Lusikisiki.
Unknown gunmen killed 16 women and two men at two separate houses in the early hours Saturday morning.
The South African Police Service in the province said it’s following leads regarding the horrific attack.
Two days after tragedy struck, government officials will pay the two homes where the massacre took place a visit.
There is still a great sense of fear among members of the community, with many hesitant to speak to the media.
Some said while they have seen deadly shootings in the area before, the latest incident was unprecedented.
It’s understood the relatives who were killed, were gathered in preparation for a cleansing ceremony of two family members who were shot and killed last year.
While police investigations continue, some survivors have been taken to a place of safety.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has since extended his condolences to the affected families, vowing that police would bring the perpetrators to book.
