Here are some events happening in and around Cape Town this weekend (12-13 October 2024).

Durbie Dash

When: Saturday, 12 October

Where: Durbanville, Cape Town

About the event: The annual event is the most important fundraising event for the Durbanville High School. It is a professionally hosted, competitive and unique event experience for all levels of cyclists and trail runners looking for an opportunity to experience the unfiltered beauty of Durbanville and its surrounding vineyards.  
 
It offers a carefully planned portfolio of events for road cyclists, mountain bikers and trail runners. 

Cycling options include: 

  • Road Cycling: 90km and 46km 
  • Mountain Biking: 60km, 50km and 25km   
  • Gravel event: 86km, 31km and 12km 
  • Trail Run: 21km, 10km and 6km 

Registration and Late Entries: 2 pm – 6 pm

Waddle for the African Penguin

About the event: In support of keeping penguins alive, the Two Oceans Aquarium, SANCCOB, CapeRADD and 'I AM WATER' invite you to join on 12 October 2024 which is also African Penguin Awareness Day, for a 'waddle' from Muizenberg to Simon's Town.

The waddle is aimed at showing support and generating awareness among our leaders to remember penguins in the fight to keep them alive. 

When: Saturday, 12 October

Where: various routes have different starting points

  • Full route (16km): Meet at Surfer's Corner, Muizenberg at 08h30 am 
  • Shorter route (4km): Meet at Long Beach, Simon's Town at 11h30 am
  • Finish: Both routes will meet up and pass Boulders Beach, ending at Water's Edge, Simon's Town at approximately 1 pm

Dress code: black and white clothing (like the penguins), and comfortable walking shoes.

Posters and signs are encouraged to make your voices heard.

Spot prizes will be handed out to attendees (including one for the 'best-dressed' waddler).

Diemersfontein Pinotage Trail Run

When: Saturday, 12 October 2024

Where: Diemersfontein Wine Estate, Wellington

About the event: The event celebrates the rich heritage of the Sonnenberg family, who have been crafting unforgettable moments at Diemersfontein for generations. 

Originally a family retreat, this estate has blossomed into a renowned destination for exceptional wines and warm countryside hospitality.

Entry includes: 

A complimentary bottle of The Prodigy Pinotage to commemorate International Pinotage Day. 

Participants are encouraged to take their wine home to enjoy later or share with friends, making it a perfect gift.

Choose your challenge from three scenic routes: 

5 km trail run:
Start Time: 8:30 AM

10 km trail run: 
Start Time: 8:15 AM

17 km trail run:
Start Time: 7:45 AM

Ommiedraai 10km and 5km Race 2024  

When: Sunday, 13 October 2024

Where: Rosmead Sports Ground, Loch Rd, Claremont, Cape Town

About the event: a thrilling road race through the scenic routes of Cape Town. Perfect for runners of all levels. This popular event offers a well-organised course, a friendly atmosphere, and stunning views. 

With professional timing and great prizes, it’s an unmissable race for those seeking a personal best or simply enjoying a community run. 

Race distances: 

  • 10km 
  • 5km

Location: Kenilworth Centre

  • Friday, 11 October 2024: 3 pm - 7 pm  
  • Saturday: 12 October 2024: 10 am - 5 pm 

Race day start time: 

  • 10km: 6:30am 5km - 6:45 am
  • The cut-off for all races is at 8:30 am.

Sunset to Full Moon Hike at Muratie 

When: Wednesday, 16 October 2024 from 5 pm to sunset at 6:59 pm

Where: Dirtopia Trail Centre, Muratie Farm, Knorhoek Road, Stellenbosch

About the event: A stunning hike starting at sunset and culminating under the full moon. 

Enjoy breathtaking views of Simonsberg and the Winelands while sipping on Muratie’s award-winning wines.

This circular trail, designed by Meurant Botha, offers a unique experience as you hike back through the forest illuminated by moonlight. 

The hike will be approximately 3.5 km with over 200 hand-built steps.

Descent from the mountain begins no later than 7:15 pm to ensure safety. 

Cost:

  • R130 per adult
  • R60 for children under 10 

What to bring:

  • picnic blanket
  • warm clothing for after dark
  • headlamp or torch
  • good hiking shoes 

Event highlights: 

  • Wine station: enjoy wine tastings at the picnic lookout point. Options include Lady Alice MCC, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, and Blended Red available by glass or bottle. 
  • A lucky draw will feature a FALKE sock hamper, and you can browse FALKE products at the Trail Centre.
