John Maytham interviews Gabriella Esposito, Chef and Food Specialist at Giovanni’s and Giovanni's daughter.
Listen below.
One of Cape Town's most beloved delis, Giovanni's in Green Point, has been sold after 35 years of family ownership.
Founded by Giovanni Esposito, the deli has been a true family business, with Giovanni’s mother, Rosa, playing an integral role in the kitchen.
"Dad is 61 and he's worked like this for 40 years; a seven-day week. He's tired, he's got grand kids, he wants to write the cookbook, he wants to travel, he wants to take a bit of a sabbatical."
- Gabriella Esposito
While the Esposito family transitions, Giovanni’s daughter, Gabriella Esposito, will remain on as a chef and food specialist, alongside several other family members, to ensure the new owners, the Sole family, continue the tradition of excellence with the authentic recipes Giovanni's is known for.
The Sole family, who also own Alphen Constantia Farm Stall and Cape Quarter Spar, along with the beloved Giovanni’s staff, now have the exciting task of carrying on the deli’s legacy.
Esposito is optimistic about the new owners’ opportunities for growth, but she’s quick to set the record straight: if you were hoping Giovanni’s might turn into a franchise, think again!
"We're all very, very close and that will not be changing...No one is leaving."
- Gabriella Esposito (02:26)
