DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Transport says it will meet with the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) and other taxi associations in a bid to resolve an ongoing taxi strike.
The meeting is set for Thursday.
Operators from the Durban Long Distance Association are on day five of a strike.
They’re unhappy with the department’s Operation Shanela requirement for minibus taxi owners must have permits to operate.
Several vehicles from the association have been impounded due to not having permits.
KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma says they will meet with the owners who aren’t part of the strike to hear their views.
“We’ve already invited all of them just to make sure that we assemble as a team, we’ve agreed in principle on the issue of adherence and obeying the law that as long as they don’t have permits, they can’t be on the road - we are going to impound them.”
Duma added his department will not tolerate lawlessness.
“Our is to ensure that we apply zero tolerance on the roads so that we attract more tourists and investors in the province.”
