CAPE TOWN - Social housing lobby group, Ndifuna Ukwazi, is calling for the removal of the current minister of human settlements, Thembi Simelane.

This was after President Cyril Ramaphosa reshuffled Simelane from the department of justice and constitutional development to the human settlements portfolio on Tuesday.

Simelane is facing allegations linked to a loan she took from a VBS investment broker when she was Polokwane mayor in 2016.

Ndifuna Ukwazi said her appointment to human settlements would disrupt progress to address the housing crisis.

The organisation's executive director, Mpho Raboeane, said her removal from the justice portfolio highlighted the seriousness of the allegations.

"We call on the president to appoint capable, honest leaders to lead the state's efforts to address our housing crisis."
