DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements Department has discouraged traditional leaders from distributing land that is vulnerable to severe weather.
A number of communities, particularly in rural areas, are under tribal authority in the province and are granted land by chiefs and headsmen.
But with the inclement conditions, Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said that building in those areas was hazardous.
"We encourage traditional leaders in particular, don't give people land that is called wetlands, wet log areas and areas where lightning is used to, it is something we want to discourage at this point and time."
Duma added that building in wetland areas must be avoided.
"It is an area where you must build, we've not advanced to that level."
