JOHANNESBURG - In Eastern Cape, police remain on high alert ahead of a planned illegal shutdown in the Buffalo City Metro.
Posters and voice notes circulated on social media on Monday, informing the public of a protest planned by the Mdantsane East London Taxi Association.
The shutdown is over claims by taxi operators that police are persecuting a prominent taxi boss and businessman.
Department of Transport spokesperson Makhaya Komisa said, “The MEC, Xolile Nqatha, is making a clarion call to the public to remain vigilant and report any issues encountered on the roads to the law enforcement agencies. The MEC says government cannot allow anarchists to infringe upon the rights of citizens whenever they choose.”
