It is understood the criminals pounced on the group of 12 patrollers in the early hours, stoning them and opening fire.
On Tuesday, Police Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu and Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni are in Soshanguve to get a briefing from police and visit the affected families.
One female patroller was among the group of volunteers.
She is among the people hospitalised.
Her mother said she sustained severe injuries to the head, and she’s worried about the long-term impact this will have on her child.
“There are security guards watching them at the hospital, and that puts us at ease, but not entirely because anyone can be bribed to finish them off.”
The patrollers had been working since 2024, getting donations from the community as payment.
They’ve been lauded for their commitment to fighting crime.
