Make your voice heard! Public participation opens on future of Good Hope Centre
The City of Cape Town’s Economic Growth Directorate invites residents, businesses and stakeholders to submit their comments on the proposed redevelopment of the Good Hope Centre.
The City of Cape Town is trying to unlock the full potential of the Cape of Good Hope Centre, either via sale or transfer for redevelopment, while ensuring long-term benefits for Cape Town’s economy, heritage and communities.
The public comment period will be open until Monday 21 April 2025.
In alignment with the City of Cape Town’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) 2022-2027, this initiative seeks to revitalise the Good Hope Centre precinct by fostering economic growth, creating employment opportunities and attracting investment.
The proposed redevelopment aims to transform the underused asset into a dynamic, multi-use space, enhancing the urban landscape while ensuring long-term sustainability.
The city is calling on all residents, businesses, and stakeholders to submit their comments to shape the precinct’s future.
“We encourage all Capetonians to share their views on this proposal. The Good Hope Centre has played an important role in the city’s history, and its redevelopment presents a unique opportunity to reimagine its purpose, while ensuring it contributes meaningfully to our economy and communities.”
- Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth
“As the site is no longer required for basic municipal services, its transformation aligns with the City’s commitment to responsible asset management and strategic urban development. By unlocking its potential, we can create a vibrant, inclusive, and economically viable precinct.”
- Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth
Key benefits of the proposed redevelopment:
• Unlocking economic potential: Attracting investment, driving local business growth, and creating employment opportunities both during and after redevelopment.
• Heritage preservation and adaptive reuse: Retaining key historical elements while introducing a modern, sustainable design.
• Financial sustainability: Reducing the burden of ongoing operational and maintenance costs, allowing for better allocation of municipal resources. In addition, enhance the property’s future market value, increasing property tax revenues and strengthening the City’s financial sustainability through its redevelopment.
• Urban integration and inclusivity: Enhancing public amenities, improving accessibility, and fostering community engagement.
• Infrastructure and connectivity upgrades: Upgrading surrounding transport links and public spaces to enhance the precinct’s long-term viability.
