CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape government said that it would be spending R33.3 billion on education this year.
Tabling his department’s budget on Monday, MEC David Maynier said that this was a 5.9% increase compared to last year's budget.
The MEC said it was also the largest departmental budget in the Western Cape.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) reduced more than 2,400 teaching posts this year due to a R3.8 billion budget shortfall.
Maynier thanked educators across the province for pulling their weight.
"We are stepping up to tackle challenges faced in education by improving learning outcomes, creating secure school environments, supporting vulnerable learners, and ensuring departmental sustainability. The past year has been an extremely difficult one for our sector, but our staff members continue to prioritise the best interests of our learners."
