ROODEPORT - Police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a missing child was found in a dam in Tshepisong, Roodeport.
Mojalefa Savhuli was reported missing by his family on Sunday when they could not find him.
He was last seen playing at a local sports field close to his home.
Police said the area where the child was found was just 2km away from where he was last seen.
His body was spotted by a group of boys passing a local dam on Thursday morning.
Community members said they were confused as to why they did not see his body sooner when they searched the same dam.
SAPS spokesperson Mavela Masondo said they would be looking into how the child ended up in the dam.
"We are not sure whether the child was killed somewhere and dumped in this dam or whether the child drowned, walked to this dam and drowned, that one, we are not sure. It will be part of the investigation. We understand that the community is angry at the moment. We also sympathise with them," said Masondo.
The family has positively identified the remains found in the dam.
