Shaun Scrooby have made it on to the list of Top 101 Steak Restaurants in the world - Johannesburg's The Blockman, and VUUR near Stellenbosch.

John Maytham chats to Shaun Scrooby, owner-chef at VUUR which is located on the Remhoogte Wine Estate in the Cape winelands.

It came in at number 87 on the global list and was honoured as the best meat-centric destination on the African continent.

The awards description alludes to the restaurant marrying 'the primal allure of open-fire cooking with the refined elegance of South African hospitality.'

VUUR utilises up to six different types of wood, each chosen for its unique flavour profile.

Dishes are prepared in front of guests, with chefs sharing the stories and inspirations behind each creation.

'We take it one fire at a time, building towards the future' says Scrooby after winning the award.

"We love our meat and we offer an array of different cuts and cutlets. I think the quality of the product is why we were noticed and got on to the list."

Scrooby cites our wonderful braai culture as the inspiration behind the concept of VUUR.

"When I looked at what I want to do with the restaurant, I realised that for this braai-crazy country we don't have many fire-cooking restaurants, so for me it was 'there we go!'."

While they have a very big local following, their global listing has piqued the interest of more international visitors, Scrooby says.

"I'd say 80% of our diners are local, but we're definitely seeing an increase from the internationals because this list is internationally known. It's great for us - every little bit helps and all we need to do is stay humble and maintain the quality."
