The late South African ambassador to France and Monaco, Nathi Mthethwa, has been laid to rest at his homestead in Kwambonambi, northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Mthethwa died in Paris, France, last week.
Authorities are yet to release a report of findings into their investigation on the cause of his death.
He was afforded a special official funeral, category 2, where government officials, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, gave farewell remarks.
Many flocked to the dusty rural area of kwambonambi situated just outside one of KwaZulu-Natal’s economic hubs, Richards Bay, to bid a final farewell to Mthethwa.
During tributes shared on Sunday, Mthethwa was described as a patriot and a dedicated public servant who strived for peace even during the tense political violence which engulfed KZN.
KZN Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli echoed these sentiments.
“To you, son of the soil, nsizwa yakithi, a promise I wish to make, on behalf of all of us entrusted with the leadership of your beloved home province of KwaZulu-Natal, is that our province shall never again return to conflict.”
A police parade gave a final salute to their former minister as his chapter closes.
