More than 3,000 parolees rearrested for committing crimes - Groenewald

Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald was responding to questions in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) about the successes and levels of rehabilitation in the country's correctional facilities.

CAPE TOWN - Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald said that more than 3,000 parolees had to be rearrested in the last year for committing crime.

Groenewald said that the offenders had since had their parole revoked, but expressed serious concerns about the trend of parolees reoffending.

The minister was responding to questions in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) about the successes and levels of rehabilitation in the country's correctional facilities.

"Recidivism in community corrections refers to parolees and probationers who are still on parole and commit crimes and their parole is revoked. A total of 3,147 parolees and probationers committed crimes between the 1st of April 2024 and the 31st of March 2025 while on parole."
