JOHANNESBURG - Police have confirmed that no sensitive information linked to the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial was compromised, following an attempted kidnapping and robbery of a former investigator.
The officer was travelling in a state vehicle on Thursday evening when he was followed by a group of suspects who tried to force him into the boot of the car.
Although the suspects made off with a state-issued firearm, a laptop, and several other items, the officer escaped unharmed.
SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said that key case documents, including the original docket, had already been duplicated and shared with the defence team in 2022.
"The motive for the attack is under investigation, but General Fani Masemola would like to assure the country and the Meyiwa family that this unfortunate incident will not in any way affect the ongoing murder trial, as only the copies of the occurrence book and cell registers were taken."
